Non-Interconnected Smoke Alarms in Multi-Storey Dwellings

Fire safety/smoke-alarms/standard/pre–1970, 1970–2000, 2000–present/all

I tested each alarm on a two-storey Class 1a dwelling and found the units operating independently - pressing one did not trigger the others. I reference NCC 3.7.5.3 for interconnection on multi-storey dwellings, and in my view this arrangement leaves upper-floor occupants exposed to a fire originating on a different level while they sleep.

Causes

  • Retrofit works only added alarms on one level without wiring a shared trigger loop
  • Electrician omitted the interconnect conductor during hardwired installation
  • Mixed battery and mains units installed that are not compatible for wireless interconnection

Symptoms to look for

  • Testing one alarm does not cause alarms on other levels to sound
  • Only a single alarm present on the upper floor with no signalling cable to lower units
  • Brand or model mismatch between upstairs and downstairs alarms blocking wireless pairing

Remedies

  • Engage a licensed electrician to hardwire an interconnect conductor between all alarms
  • Replace units with a matched set of wireless interconnected photoelectric alarms
  • Verify full interconnection by pressing test on each alarm and confirming all others sound
