Non-Compliant Pool Fence Gate - Self-Closing or Self-Latching Failure

I tested the pool barrier gate against AS 1926.1 and it failed to self-close and self-latch from one or more start positions, or I measured the latch release below 1500mm, or I passed a 100mm gauge beside or beneath the gate leaf. Sometimes the gate swings inward toward the pool rather than outward. Pool drowning remains the leading cause of accidental death for Australian children under five, and gate failure is the single most common finding I record at annual pool barrier inspections.
Causes
- Hinge spring fatigue over years of service in coastal or UV-exposed conditions
- Gate post movement or settlement increasing the latch engagement gap
- Occupant manually disabling the self-closer for convenience
- Latch release mechanism sitting below the 1500mm reference height
- Fence line rebuilt without reinstalling the gate to AS 1926.1
- Replacement gate selected without checking for AS 1926.1 certification
Symptoms to look for
- Gate fails my release-and-latch test when I let it go from 150mm of closed
- I measured the latch release handle at less than 1500mm above finished ground
- A 100mm gauge passes beneath the gate leaf at some point in the swing
- Gate hung to swing toward the pool rather than away from the water
- Rope, wedge, or cable-tie observed propping the gate open
- Latch spring visibly corroded or operating with audible friction
Remedies
- Replace hinges with AS 1926.1-certified self-closing hydraulic or spring hinges
- Adjust or replace the magnetic latch to engage reliably at the reference 1500mm height
- Rehang the gate to open outward away from the pool zone
- Pack the threshold to reduce the under-gate gap below 100mm
- Remove all props, rope ties, and hold-open devices
- Book a certified pool barrier inspection after remediation
