Shower Floor Fall Insufficient to Drain to Waste

Moisture/wet-area-waterproofing/standard/1970–2000, 2000–present/all

I ran water in the shower recess and it ponded on the floor rather than draining cleanly to the waste - I measured a fall flatter than the 1:80 reference I work from (AS 3740). In my experience standing water then loads the grout lines, saturates the membrane at the low point, and tracks under the hob into the adjacent room. I often see this where the screed has been laid flat to suit a large-format tile layout.

Causes

  • Tile screed laid flat or with fall well short of 1:80
  • Waste outlet set too high relative to the surrounding finished floor level
  • Large-format tiles bridging the drainage fall and creating localised flat spots

Symptoms to look for

  • Persistent pooling or slow drainage of water in the shower base after use
  • Discoloured, softened or missing grout at the waste outlet
  • Moisture damage visible in the ceiling or wall of the room below or adjacent

Remedies

  • Re-screed the shower base to achieve a fall of at least 1:80 to the waste, then reinstate membrane and tiling
  • Lower the waste outlet and install a puddle flange to suit the new screed level
  • Consider a linear drain upgrade where large-format tiles are desired
