Non-Compliant or Overloaded Switchboard

Electrical/real/pre–1970, 1970–2000/all

Switchboard not meeting current AS/NZS 3000 requirements, including missing RCDs (safety switches), overcrowded circuits, or outdated ceramic fuses. Common in pre-2000 Perth and Sydney homes that have not been upgraded.

Causes

  • Original switchboard not upgraded to current standards
  • Additional circuits added without professional design
  • Absence of required RCD protection on power and lighting circuits

Symptoms to look for

  • Ceramic rewirable fuses instead of circuit breakers
  • Missing safety switches (RCDs) on power circuits
  • Visible heat discolouration at switchboard connections

Remedies

  • Full switchboard upgrade by licensed electrician
  • Install RCDs on all power and lighting circuits
  • Load assessment and circuit redistribution
