- Orange-brown rust staining visible on frame rails, legs, or fascia
- Blistering or flaking paint on frame members indicating oxidation beneath the coating
- Pitting or surface roughness on bare steel sections
- Rust runs or staining on adjacent concrete or paving below the frame
- Soft or pitted metal where a probe or screwdriver reveals depth of corrosion
Remedies
- Engage a painter to wire-brush, sand, apply a rust-converter primer, and repaint all affected sections
- Where coating has failed across large areas, consider full blast-and-recoat or powder-coat strip-and-redo by a qualified steel finisher
- Inspect posts at ground contact or in post stirrups - if corrosion extends to the base, engage a licensed carpenter to assess structural integrity before repainting
- Apply a zinc-rich or epoxy primer before topcoating in coastal or high-humidity locations to extend coating life
